I keep getting a KeBugCheck (BSOD) with messages like “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” or “System Service Exception” in Windows 7.
The instruction pointer in the stop message was never the same nor was the stop code; meaning that this was not a driver or Windows issue. ?It was a hardware issue. ?It turned out to be memory or memory configuration.
A while back I was part of a product test group that was given a six core (12 thread) Intel processor based off of the Nehalem uArch?of the i7 Extreme 990x. ?For whatever business reason it never made it to the market but it is probably one of the best CPUs Intel has made to date. ?It took me a while to find a board to support it and I finally settled on the EVGA x58 SLI3 since it could support the 1366 pin CPU.
Since the CPU has 3 DDR3 channels I picked up a 6GB memory ?kit that has 3x2GB sticks. ?I’ve been playing games, web surfing, watching videos and never have stressed the system out.
My friend had a kart race [and ended up taking first place] and I decided to strap a GoPro Hero to her?helmet to record the race. The camera was set up to record 720p at 60fps (in the event there was a need for a slow motion scene). ?Since the camera was attached to a helmet there is a lot of motion. I decided to use Gunnar Thalin’s deshaker plugin for VirtualDub. ?Running the plugin?for two passes uses quite a bit of progressing power and memory. ?A real stress test.
About 2/3 of the way through processing the frames (50k of them) my computer would BSOD. ?After a bit of testing I found out that one of the sticks of memory had failed. ?BAH. ?Always check your hardware first.
